(NC) Renovations and DIY projects are great ways to enhance your living space as we spend more time at home. Whether you are undertaking major renovations or small touch-ups, it’s important to be aware of any health risks to your health from exposure to chemicals and pollutants.
Here are some tips that can help keep you and your family safe:
Consult a pro
Hire a qualified professional to test for and remove materials that may be contaminated with harmful chemicals such as asbestos and lead.
Follow the label
Whether you’re using caulk, sealants, paints, adhesives or insulating products, be sure to carefully follow the instructions on the label before you get started. The label may also include instructions on how to use, store and dispose of the product safely. It shows hazard symbols and cautionary statements of potential hazards as well.
Dress for success
The label may also tell you what sort of personal protective equipment you should wear. It might be as simple as wearing long sleeves, long pants, gloves and a dust mask. However, other chemical products require you to wear a special type of breathing mask or respirator, gloves and safety glasses. Remember – a dust mask won’t protect you from harmful fumes.
Product labels and instructions will identify any additional personal protective equipment you should wear. Be sure it fits properly before you start your project.
